THE HUMAN AND ANIMAL BOND
The role of companion animals in the everyday lives of Americans has never been greater. The animal health industry has played a key role by providing products that make it possible for pets to live in close harmony with people.
AHI is proud to serve the animal health industry in its continuing efforts to improve the health, wellbeing, and quality of life of animals. Our member companies are consistently investing in the research and development of new, innovative diagnostic tests and equipment, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and other treatments that benefit our companion animals.
Veterinary Care
The high quality of veterinary care products available to every pet owner today would not be possible without the investment and commitment to research on the part of AHI member companies. In the U.S. alone, over $618 million was spent on the research and development of animal health products in 2006.
These efforts have resulted in dramatic improvements in the prevention and treatment of animal health issues such as pest infestation, distemper, hepatitis, and feline leukemia. Life-prolonging therapies are now widely available to treat cancer in dogs and cats. New diagnostic tests and medical equipment geared specifically to animals is being developed every day, leading to better treatments and more options for veterinarians and pet owners.
Animal Advocacy
AHI, through its outreach and advocacy efforts, supports a balanced approach to pet litigation issues, animal antibiotic use, and the control and eradication of zoonotic disease.
AHI works diligently on behalf of our members to communicate factual information regarding animal health issues to our legislators, government agencies, and members of the media.
We recognize and respect the bond that exists between animals and humans. It is our intention to support and enhance that bond, for the benefit of animals and humans alike.
Innovations in Research
The bond between animals and humans goes beyond the love of our pets. It exists as a link between the health of wildlife and humans (West Nile Virus, rabies) and the health of animals that serve as a source of nutrition for the human population (BSE, Avian flu).
Our members provide the capital and intellectual investment necessary to advance the science of healthcare necessary for the wellness of animals and humans. Everything from simple veterinary care for the health maintenance of a pet, to the prevention of diseases like avian flu depends on research.
